Curious Croppers Tomatoes: New Zealand’s Heirloom Marvels

PCL News | | Return|

What Makes Curious Croppers Tomatoes So Special?

Curious Croppers specializes in heirloom tomato varieties, many of which are rare, temperamental, and visually stunning. From tomatoes that resemble pleated skirts to fuzzy yellow fruits that look like peaches, their produce is as much art as it is food

The Tringhams grow over 40 different varieties, each chosen for its unique flavor, texture, and appearance. Their philosophy? “We pull off all the boring ones. We want our tomatoes to be works of art,” says Anthony

Sustainable Farming with Agroecology

Curious Croppers is also pioneering agroecological farming practices. Instead of sterilizing their environment, they embrace biodiversity. Their greenhouses are surrounded by wild meadows filled with native plants like dandelions and wild carrots, which attract beneficial insects. One standout example is their use of Engytatus modestus, a native tomato bug that acts as a natural predator to pests like whitefly. They even grow tobacco plants to help sustain these helpful bugs. Inside the greenhouse, tomatoes are grown in a mix of cocopeat, compost, and seaweed, creating a nutrient-rich environment that supports healthy root systems and vibrant fruit

From Farm to Fine Dining

Curious Croppers tomatoes are a staple in New Zealand’s top restaurants, with 70% of their produce going directly to chefs through the Produce Company.

Why Chefs Love Them

Chefs rave about Curious Croppers for their intense flavorunusual shapes, and vibrant colors. Whether it’s the beefy, rouge-colored Brandywine or the sweet and tangy Merrygold cherry tomato, each variety offers a unique culinary experience

Final Thoughts

Curious Croppers is more than a tomato farm—it's a celebration of flavor, sustainability, and creativity. Their commitment to growing “cranky but gorgeous” tomatoes using eco-friendly methods makes them a standout in New Zealand’s agricultural landscape.

Curious Croppers tomatoes will start to come into season from September, please contact our customer services team or your account manager for more information.
